Here’s What Happened When I Agreed To Try ‘Smell Dating’
Smell Dating matches people based on their smell. The services will send you a t-shirt to wear for 3 days. Then send it back to receive 10 shirts.
As a single woman who is willing to try anything — well, almost anything — to meet my special someone, I was intrigued by Smell Dating when I wrote about it back in February. No deodorant, no perfume, just your natural sometimes sweaty smell. Then you mail the at this point, smelly t-shirt back and in return you get samples of t-shirts worn by other people who have done the same thing. The rest — a date, marriage, lifelong love — is up to you.
However, after I found out that Smell Dating was only open to people at a time in New York City, the exclusivity and urgency drew me in. Plus, it would probably make a pretty good story, right? After I had officially registered on the Smell Dating website, I gave all my friends fair warning. Luckily, I was wrong. I could shower. When the t-shirt arrived, it came with detailed instructions, and my adventure began.
I tried to help the process by using my most aromatic LUSH products in the shower and spending a lot of time at a local coffee shop that specializes in Nutella drinks and baked goods. My Smell Dating samples arrived in little tightly-sealed bags, which we neatly displayed on the HelloGiggles office floor for the purposes of this photo.
Yup, Smell Dating Is a Thing
If you’re sick of writing up witty bios on dating websites or taking dozens of selfies to find your perfect profile pic, you might want to try out this new website that claims to help you find love by smelling a dirty t-shirt. Tega Brain, an artist and a teacher and Sam Lavigne, an editor and a researcher at New York University, started a project called Smell Dating , a website that matches people through the sense of smell alone.
Dubbed “the first mail odor dating service” on its website, Smell Dating works by first sending users a t-shirt that they wear for three days and three nights without putting on deodorant or perfume. Then return the used T-shirt to the company so they can cut it up to send to potential mates. The sender also receives swatches of shirts worn by others to smell and determine which scent they like. If two people like one another’s smell, Smell Dating provides contact information for both parties.
You return the shirt to us in a prepaid envelope. We send you swatches of t-shirts worn by a selection of other individuals. You smell the samples and tell us who you like. If someone whose smell you like likes the smell of you too, we’ll facilitate an exchange of contact information. The rest is up to you. Notice how the process includes no shirt pictures, no likes or dislikes, no attraction, no shirt. The project is vastly different from the common wisdom about what makes a good online dating service, and it’s founded on serious research.
However when it comes to long-term romantic partnership it may actually be riskier to ignore the powerful signal of scent than to rely on it. Smell researchers even speculate that high contemporary divorce rates may be related to the overuse of deodorants and the shirt of our natural olfactory intelligence.
Can a dirty T-Shirt help you find love?
Each of its first clients received a T-shirt to wear for three days straight without bathing. Smell Dating then sent batches of 10 mixed swatches back to the clients to sniff this week. A match will be made if one client likes the scent of another and the olfactory attraction is mutual. In other words, if “Client 55” likes “Client 69” and vice versa, put a heart around it, Brain said. The idea is based on the science of pheromones, the chemical signals that creatures from gerbils to giraffes send out to entice mates.
It’s much more innate.

Inside, there were instructions, a plain white t-shirt, and an envelope to mail back my shirt after wearing it for three days straight. As per the instructions, I needed to wear the shirt at all times for the three days.
I was allowed to shower, but perfume and deodorant were a going to be a no-go for the next 72 hours. Here’s a closer look at the shirt in the bag. The entire experiment was anonymous, so participants were assigned a number. I got Over the next three days, I wore the shirt without taking it off, day and night. For the sake of my coworkers, I showered once during the experiment and skipped my usual sweaty spin class.

Love at first sniff! Forget Tinder, new dating service promises to find your perfect match by smelling the dirty T-shirts of potential partners.
A pair of New York artists have created a unique dating service that relies on body odour to find potential couples. Smell Dating , which calls itself “the first mail odor dating service”, has been created by Tega Brain and Sam Lavigne of Useless Press , an experimental digital art group. They then receive a t-shirt in the mail and are instructed to wear it for three days, while steering clear of deodorants, perfumes, or other artificial things that could affect their bodies’ natural odours.
Once the three days are up, they send the t-shirt back, and later recieve the t-shirts of 10 other participants in the mail. They can then carefully smell each t-shirt, determining which they like the most. If two participants like the smell of each other, Smell Dating will give them the other’s contact information.
After that, love is left to take its course. Explaining their decision to build a dating service on unwashed t-shirts, Smell Dating say on their website: “Unlike sight and sound, smell is interpreted first in terms of memory and emotion before being mapped to language.

A: Smell is one of the most poignant and evocative experiences afforded by the human sensory apparatus. Also known as olfaction, it is our physical capacity for detecting and perceiving the molecules around us. It is mediated by specialized sensory cells of the nasal cavity, which can be considered analogous to sensory cells of the antennae of invertebrates.
In humans, olfaction occurs when odorant molecules bind to specific sites in the olfactory receptors inside the nose. These come together at the glomerulus, a structure which transmits signals to the olfactory bulb, a part of the brain directly above the nasal cavity and below the frontal lobe. From here, the signals are fed into the limbic system, where emotion and memory are processed, before finally passing into the language-processing frontal cortex. This particular neural pathway means that, unlike sight and sound, smell is interpreted first in terms of memory and emotion before being mapped to language.
Although much remains unknown about smell perception, this cognitive process may be the reason that smell is so hard to describe in words, and often thought to be subjective. As researchers Nadia Wagner and Adam Jasper observe, the difficulty with communicating smell is not due to the subjectivity of perception but in describing it in language. This is evident in the English language, which has no specific vocabulary to describe smell and approximates olfactory experience using adjectives borrowed from the other senses.
A: At Smell Dating we understand the metrics of compatibility are chemical; connection is a matter of intercourse not interface. The Internet has replaced fleshy experience with flat apparitions, avatars and painstakingly curated profile pics.

The idea, conceived by artist and environmental engineer Tega Brain and her colleague Brian House , is to put the pheromones you generate while swiping through Tinder or scanning OkCupid messages to good use. Smelling a prospective date, they posit, is all you need to decide if you are compatible. Brain partnered with Useless Press co-founder Sam Lavigne to bring this theory out into the real world.
Right now, you can help test Brain’s theories—and potentially meet the love of your life—with the system they’ve developed. The Smell. Dating website describes the process thus:.
